Obama's state of the Union was disappointing to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to viciously turn on the man I helped elect into office like so much of this savage nation, but to say I'm not disappointed in him would be a lie. After eight years of feeling constantly terrified by the Republicans and the Bush administration, it would be nice if Obama were beating the neo cons back with a sledge hammer, rather than fanning the flames of their insanity. His attempts at bi-partisanship have made it extremely clear that Republicans want nothing more than to destroy the Democrats, not to work with them. Rather than sitting around refusing to play their game I was hoping Obama was going to bring the fire last night. Deep inside I wanted him to take the stage holding a flaming sword, slice a copy of the bible in half, and draw a blazing line across the stage before daring a Republican to cross it; a challenge to return their flat out refusal to vote YES on anything he proposes.
When dealing with completely unreasonable people, being reasonable seems like a terrible idea. Why didn't the Dems push health care through with a public option when they had a super majority? Why are they letting the Republicans systematically discredit them? The obvious answer is that the Republicans are simply better politicians than the Dems. It hurts to say, but this year the democrats have really displayed a complete and baffling lack of knowledge in regards to the modern political process. They operate off of some Utopian notion of how it all should work, rather than how it does work. As a liberal I want a politician who will go to battle for me, get their hands dirty, and twist the system around just as badly as the republicans have. Really mangle the thing until its lies, terminal, in their arms coughing out drugs, peace, social reform, and the insides of the Bush administration. Stop fucking around Obama.
